Carol -- Chapter 1- Prudence
I have had this chapter read for most of the week, but when trying to decide what to blog, I kept coming up against a wall. Basically I thought of only one meaning of prudence, but after reading about it, realized that there are more. I then couldn't put my thoughts into words. When I was praying about this dilema while doing the Stations of the Cross, it's like the Holy Spirit directed me to the meditation on the 6th Station where Veronica wipes the face of Jesus. The meditation reads: " Lord Jesus, at times I am afraid to reach out to others. I do nothing when I should speak out. Give me a deeper and more courageous faith. Help me to trust that you are with me." This seems to sum it all up.
I have learned in this chapter the difference between natural and supernatural prudence. Natural prudence is common sense (this was my understanding). Supernatural prudence makes us organize our activities, desires, possibilities, resources, and behavior in such a way that we may come to eternal life.
On page 41 it states: "There is also false prudence, like those who go along with evil because they do not know what to do or because they are afraid of the consequences of opposition to the prevailing point of view."
The steps to follow are:
1) resolve to be prudent by following the Gospel teachings and the example of Christ.
2) Christians must clearly distinguish between natural prudence, which seeks natural goodness, and supernatural goodness, which seeks the kingdom of God.
3)we must not remain silent

I think it is hard, when a chapter is longer and full of good material, to try to give a short reflection/summary.
I seems we all picked up on the natural versus supernatural difference in virtues.
Thanks for pulling in the Stations of the Cross meditation. The Stations is one of my favorite prayers. I like the tradition prayers (We adore the oh Christ....because by thy holy cross, thou has redeemed the word"), the pilgrimage around the church, the genuflection, etc. I think you did capture prudence in the meditation...when we decide to speak or not, reach out or not... and then are we doing from as natural behavior or for a supernatural purpose.
I have enjoyed everyone's post. Thanks for sharing your thoughts even though it started out as a struggle to put them into word. Praise God.
